# Test on Android with an APK File

> Install a test build of the FieldKo Atlas app on an Android phone or tablet from an APK file.

An APK file is an Android app installer. Your FieldKo contact can send you an APK file so you can try a new version of FieldKo Atlas before it's released in Google Play.

<Warning>
  Install APK files only from the link your FieldKo contact sent you. Don't install FieldKo Atlas APK files from other websites.
</Warning>

## Before You Begin

* You have a link to the FieldKo Atlas APK file from your FieldKo contact.
* If FieldKo Atlas is already on your device, sync first. Open the side menu, tap **Sync**, and make sure **Pending Changes** shows 0 records and 0 images. You may need to uninstall the current version, which deletes any unsynced work.

## Install the Test Build

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the link, and download the APK file.
2. Open the downloaded file from your notifications or the **Files** app.
3. If Android asks whether to allow installs from this source, tap **Settings**, turn on **Allow from this source**, and then go back.
4. Tap **Install**.
5. If Google Play Protect shows a warning, check that the file came from your FieldKo contact, and then choose to install anyway.
6. Open FieldKo Atlas and log in.

The exact wording of these screens depends on your Android version and device maker.

## If the App Doesn't Install

If you see "App not installed" or a message that the app conflicts with an existing app, the version from Google Play is in the way:

1. In FieldKo Atlas, tap **Sync**, and make sure **Pending Changes** shows 0 records and 0 images.
2. Uninstall FieldKo Atlas.
3. Open the APK file again, and tap **Install**.

## Update to a Newer Test Build

APK test builds don't update automatically. When your FieldKo contact sends a new APK file, sync first, and then install the new file the same way. It installs over the previous test build.

## Go Back to the Google Play Version

1. In FieldKo Atlas, tap **Sync**, and make sure **Pending Changes** shows 0 records and 0 images.
2. Uninstall the test build.
3. Install [FieldKo Atlas from Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fieldko.reactnative).
4. Optional: To stop other apps from installing APK files, go to your device settings, find **Install unknown apps**, and turn off the app you used to open the file.
