# Take Photos with Smart Camera

> Take survey photos with guided quality checks, browse your photos, and control how large your photos are.

Smart Camera helps you take clear shelf photos for survey questions. It guides you while you frame the shot and checks the photo's quality on your device. You can also browse all your photos in the app and choose how large they are.

## Add a Photo to a Survey Question

Start from the survey question that asks for a photo:

1. On a survey question, tap the photo box. If Smart Camera is available, the box says **AI-Guided Capture**.
2. Tap one of these options:
   * **Smart Capture (Guided)**: Opens Smart Camera with live guidance and a quality check.
   * **Quick Photo**: Opens the normal camera.
   * **Choose from Library** (iOS) or **From Library** (Android): Picks an existing photo.

Some questions allow several photos. When you reach the limit, you see "You can attach up to N photos for this question." On optional photo questions, you can mark the photo as not required.

<Note>
  Smart Camera is used only for survey photos. Photos on visits, accounts, pack-outs, and other records use the normal camera.
</Note>

## Use Smart Camera

After you tap **Smart Capture (Guided)**, Smart Camera guides you to a good shot:

1. Follow the prompts on screen, such as "Align shelf edges inside the frame", "Hold steady!", "Level your phone", "Too dark - enable flash", or "Too close - step back".
2. When you see **Ready to capture**, take the photo.

After you take the photo, Smart Camera checks it on your device. The check doesn't need a connection. It scores **Lighting**, **Clarity**, **Completeness**, and **Stability**, and then gives 1 of 3 results.

| Result | What You Can Do |
| - | - |
| **Great Shot** | Tap **Done**. |
| **Acceptable** | Tap **Use Photo**, or tap **Retake** for a better one. |
| **Try Again** | Tap **Retake Photo**. You can't use this photo. |

Under **To improve**, you see tips such as "Hold phone steadier", "Turn off flash or change angle to reduce glare", or "Capture more of the display".

<Tip>
  Glare from shelf lighting or the flash is the most common reason for a retake. Tilt the phone slightly, or turn off the flash.
</Tip>

If you see "Quality analysis unavailable - please verify photo manually", the check couldn't run. Look at the photo yourself before you use it.

## Change the Photo Size

The app compresses photos to 1 MB by default. To change this, in **Settings**, under **Photos**, tap **Max Photo Size**. See [Personalize Your Settings](/getting-started/settings#photos).

## Browse Your Photos

The **Photos** gallery shows all the photos stored in the app:

1. In the side menu, tap **Photos**.
2. Optional: To group photos, tap **Date** or **Type**. To filter, tap the chips at the top.
3. Tap a photo to view it full screen.

From the full-screen view, you can swipe between photos, share a photo, or see its details (size, record, date, and location).

You can't delete photos from the gallery. To remove a photo from a survey answer, tap **Remove** on the survey question.

## When Photos Upload

Photos save on your device first. The app uploads them when you tap **Sync** on the [Sync screen](/sync/sync-screen) with **Sync Images** turned on. Background sync doesn't upload photos.

A photo uploads only after its record reaches Salesforce. To learn more, see [Understand Offline Work and Sync](/sync/how-sync-works#order-of-uploads).

## Allow Camera and Photo Library Access

If you see "Camera permission is needed to take a photo" or "Photo library access is needed to choose a photo", the app doesn't have permission yet. To give the app access, follow these steps:

1. Open your device's **Settings**.
2. Find **FieldKo Atlas**.
3. Turn on the permission.
